Philadelphia Area Unemployment Rates

According the information gathered at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area currently has an unemployment rate of 8.6% and ranks 185 in the list of cities. These numbers are from the month of November 2010 - with the most up to date numbers coming very soon (but not yet available).

The situation in Philly still shows that there is some hope for things and if you are one of the many unemployed who are looking for work don't let statistics get you down. Just make sure to keep a positive attitude and show some of the Pennsylvania spirit and the work will find you. Best of luck in your search.

Philly Workers Still Searching for Jobs

Economists are reporting that there is a drop in unemployment claims and some news reports lead people to believe that this automatically means that the economy is improving. This can confuse a lot of the public especially those still out of work and searching for jobs in the Philadelphia area. Just because initial claims for unemployment are dropping, doesn’t mean there still aren’t tons of people looking for work. It is important to remember that this number does not include people who can no longer collect benefits because they maxed out the 99 weeks or people who do not qualify for benefits for other various reasons. There are individuals who still look for jobs even though there are no more benefits available for them to apply for.

If you are searching for a job in the Philadelphia region, you know just how tough the competition is. Since there are so many people applying for so few positions, you want to make sure that you don’t miss out on a job opportunity due to something silly. Philly Residents Struggle to Find Enough Hours

As in many parts of the country, job openings seem to be slightly rising in the Philadelphia area. At first glance, that should be great news, but some of the jobs available do not offer enough hours or a high enough salary to meet the needs of Philadelphia residents. The Philadelphia area is an expensive place to live. Before a string of layoffs began a couple of years back, many residents with advanced training in an area or with college degrees found themselves making 50,000 dollars a year or more. Now when residents are looking for work, they are finding many of the openings pay only minimum wage. A bulk of the job seekers are not lazy at all and would have no problem working in retail or flipping burgers, but the pay check that comes with these jobs is not enough to feed their families and pay their mortgages.

A Mega Career Fair is being held Wednesday, January 18th 2012 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. This is a great chance for you to meet with employers face to face. The event is held indoors so there is no need to worry about inclement weather. The event is free to attend, but you must bring a resume. People unable to show a resume at the door will not be let in to the event. Resumes make it easier for serious job seekers to connect with hiring companies. Children are not permitted at the event so please make babysitting arrangements for your child in advance.
